Site de La Marbrière

Site géologique d'intérêt national dans un paysage remarquable. Ce site est reconnu comme Espace Naturel Sensible (ENS). Située en marge du Massif armoricain et du Bassin aquitain, la commune d’Ardin a autrefois produit de la pierre marbrière. Cette ancienne carrière est inscrite à l’inventaire des sites d’intérêt géologique du Poitou-Charentes depuis 1998. Les caractéristiques du lieu ont conforté l’intervention du CREN pour sa préservation. Ce site, membre du réseau 'l'homme et la pierre' se trouve au lieu-dit de La Villedé d’Ardin, à 4 kilomètres à l’est de Coulonges-sur-l’Autize. Cette marbrière compte parmi les environnements devenus trop rares dans le Département des Deux-Sèvres. Caché aux portes du bocage, le gisement de la marbrière exploité entre le XVIIIe siècle et 1950 renferme de nombreux fossiles témoins d’une origine marine datant d’environ 360 millions d’années.

Geological site of national interest in a remarkable landscape. This site is recognized as a Sensitive Natural Area (ENS). Situated on the edge of the Armorican Massif and the Aquitaine Basin, the commune of Ardin once produced marble stone. This former quarry has been listed in the inventory of sites of geological interest in Poitou-Charentes since 1998. The characteristics of the place have reinforced the intervention of the CREN for its preservation. This site, a member of the 'man and stone' network, is located in La Villedé d'Ardin, 4 kilometres east of Coulonges-sur-l'Autize. This marble quarry is one of the environments that have become too rare in the Department of Deux-Sèvres. Hidden at the gates of the bocage, the marble deposit exploited between the 18th century and 1950 contains numerous fossils bearing witness to a marine origin dating back some 360 million years.
