La Réserve Naturelle Nationale du Toarcien se compose de deux anciennes carrières à ciel ouvert situées sur la rive droite du Thouet. Elle présente un intérêt historique fondamental et ce à l'échelle internationale. La Réserve Naturelle assure la conservation du stratotype historique (ou holostratotype) du Toarcien, compris entre -183 et -176 millions d'années, c'est-à-dire la coupe qui a permis au paléontologue Alcide d'Orbigny de définir cet étage en 1849. Par ailleurs, elle permet l'observation de trois étages successifs du Jurassique : le Pliensbachien, le Toarcien (dérive du nom latin de la ville de Thouars : Toarcium) et l'Aalénien.

The Toarcien National Nature Reserve ensures the conservation of two former open quarries located on the right bank of the Thouet. These quarries are of fundamental historical interest since they are located near the place where, in 1849, the paleontologist Alcide d'Orbigny defined the type-cut or stratotype of a stage of the Jurassic system: the Toarcian (derives from the Latin name of the city of Thouars: Toarcium), between -183 and -176 million years ago. La Riserva naturale nazionale di Toarcian è costituita da due ex cave a cielo aperto sulla riva destra del Thouet. È di fondamentale interesse storico su scala internazionale. La Riserva Naturale garantisce la conservazione dello stratotipo storico (o olostratotipo) del Toarciano, di età compresa tra -183 e -176 milioni di anni, ovvero la sezione che ha permesso al paleontologo Alcide d'Orbigny di definire questa fase nel 1849. Inoltre, permette di osservare tre fasi giurassiche successive: il Pliensbachiano, il Toarciano (derivato dal nome latino della città di Thouars: Toarcium) e l'Aaleniano.
