This large park-like square, built between 1871 and 1918, is located in the heart of the "German Quarter". After the French defeat of 1870, Germany plans to make Strasbourg the capital of the Reichsland of Alsace-Lorraine. The district then called the "new city" defined a new urban planning with wide thoroughfares, administrative and cultural buildings of great prestige and opulent residential buildings. It is also reflected in a great sense of landscape. All around: the Rhine Palace, the University Library, the National Theatre are majestic examples of this imperial architecture, grandiose but warm. In the centre stands the war memorial erected in 1936 by the sculptor Drivier. It depicts a mother with her two sons, one dead for France, the other for Germany, a dramatic situation experienced by the Alsatians during the two World Wars.
